Cycling Fusion has announced the launch of the first indoor cycling application that combines virtual cycling video segments with traditional music played.

Cycling Fusion, a company specializing in indoor and outdoor cycling technology, has announced that Apple iTunes store has approved the first application that integrates virtual cycling with traditional audio played. They used virtual cycling video segments from their sister company Global Ride Productions and integrated these into their Class Builder application. The new version of Class Builder will allow indoor cycling instructors to make their classes more engaging by including climbs and breakaways in different virtual locations, instead of just playing one song after another.

The Class Builder app was originally designed as a tool to integrate music, notes from the spinning or indoor cycling instructor, and a visual display of the class or ride profile after the instructors started using the iPod in their classes. The latest version of the app, Class Builder 2.6, arrives three years later and provides instructors with video segments that are 3 to 28 minutes long and can be obtained via in-app purchases. Version 2.6 is available in the iTunes store for $19.95, and the prices of the video segments range from $0.99 to $5.99.

The latest in-app purchase option requires indoor cycling instructors to use video projectors or flat panel monitors to connect to their iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Video displays in indoor cycling rooms and spinning classes have been the latest major addition to leading gyms and fitness centres in recent years.

"Integrating virtual cycling segments has been part of the plan since we began building the Class Builder® app," said Gene Nacey, app architect, in a release. "One of the biggest hurdles we had to overcome was the music licensing. Our sister company Global Ride Productions has a unique approach to integrating music into their DVDs, with specific terrain and even the cadence of climbing all affecting what songs are used, and how they are timed in the editing process."

To get the rights to the songs used in Class Builder 2.6, Cycling Fusion obtained the download license, which means that the artists and publishers will get a share of every in-app download purchase.

Cycling Fusion developed the video segment option specifically as a tool to help instructors make their classes more exciting and to motivate gym goers to keep pedalling. While the app is not there to replace the instructor entirely, the practice of using video segments could help bridge a gap between a live instructor and a digital one.

"We believe a 100% digital delivery of an indoor cycle ride, by an experienced master trainer, or a professionally edited virtual ride with an audible coaching track would certainly be a better option than cancelling class when an instructor is sick or can’t make a unique time slot," said Nacey. "That being said, having the ability to bring a similar type of experience and excitement in the middle of a live class by your local instructor might make the experience even more real and motivational."
